(EDUCATION.) First issue of "The New Era Journal," produced by graduates of a Pennsylvania teacher's college. Volume I, No. 1. 19 pages. Quarto, 10¾ x 7¾ inches, original printed wrappers, small stain on top edge, minimal wear; a bit of rust at staples, middle two leaves detached. West Chester, PA: New Era Educational Association, February 1928

  • Notes: The New Era Educational Association was founded in 1917 by what the West Chester Daily Local News called "a group of Negro graduates of the West Chester Normal School" (31 January 1925). The school is now West Chester University, the alma mater of First Lady Jill Biden.

This is the first (and perhaps only) issue of the association's official publication. It features articles on art appreciation, school orchestras, and "Adult Education for Colored People." A short travel article describes "Seeing Southeast Alaska." Pioneering Black psychologist and educator John Henry Brodhead, who served on the association's Finance Committee, also contributed a long article on "The Normal Colored Child." A long list of the association's members closes out the magazine.
