  • Notes: Manet Harrison Fowler (1895-1976), singer, musician and educator was born in Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated from Tuskegee in 1913 and studied at the Chicago College of Music. She co-founded the Texas Association of Negro Musicians and in 1928 founded the Mwalimu School in Fort Worth, which was soon relocated to New York. Arriving in New York at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, the school provided educational opportunities in the arts for Harlem's residents. The Mwalimu school's choir, under the direction of Manet Fowler performed and recorded. Among the literally hundreds of pages of printed and manuscript material in this archive are nine original 78 RPM acetate master recordings of the Mwalimu. Manet Fowler was also a talented artist whose style combines religious and civil rights history. Included here are three of her oil paintings: "Git' on Board, the Freedom Train," "Ship of Zion," and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot."
