(EDUCATION.) Minutes and other papers of the Maryland State Colored Teachers' Association. Approximately 100 pages of manuscript, typescript, mimeographed, and printed material in one folder; minor to moderate wear. Maryland, 1933-1951

  • Notes: This professional organization was founded as the Maryland State Colored Teachers' Association, and circa 1937 was renamed the Maryland Educational Association. The organization merged with the previously all-white Maryland State Teachers Association in 1951.

    From the November 1933 annual meeting: the manuscript minutes (13 pages), a typescript financial report, and a 4-page "Report of Resolutions Committee." The minutes include a resolution that "all teachers in the state, without regard to race or sex, shall be required to meet the same standards for all certificates." The resolutions committee proposed that the Association set aside a day at future meetings for "a worthwhile dramatic, literary, musical program or Negro History Pageant, open to the public."

    From the October 1939 annual meeting, a typescript carbon packet of speeches and minutes titled "Echoes from the Maryland Education Association."

    From the October 1940 annual meeting, typescript "Notes from the High School Session," and 5 typescript resolutions on separate pages.

    8 typescript retained carbon-copy letters by the organization's Executive Secretary to Maryland officials, lobbying for equal salaries and other issues, 1941 and 1946.

    Minutes of the Liaison Committee, formed to "enlighten the State Department on matters concerning education with reference to the problems of colored schools," January 1946.

    Mimeograph roster of officers and committees, 1949.

    Mimeographed constitution and by-laws from March 1951.

    Also included are 4 issues of the organization's bulletin/newsletter, 1939-1943.
