(EDUCATION.) MURRAY, DANIEL. Murray's Historical and Biographical Encyclopedia of the Colored Race * Encyclopedia of the Colored Race. [16] pages. 8vo, self-wrappers; vertical crease where originally folded for mailing and [4] pages; small blue ink-stain at the bottom edges. Washington, D.C., 1912

  • Notes: the rare two-part prospectus for what was to be the first encyclopedia of its kind. Daniel Murray (1852-1925) was the personal assistant to the Librarian of Congress from 1881 until his death. In 1910 he conceived the idea of a massive encyclopedia of the Negro race. The project met with difficulty from the start; while several publishers agreed to print it, none would market it. Daniel Murray's vision of a Negro encyclopedia was similar to that proposed by both W. E. B. Du Bois and Carter G. Woodson. None of these projects came to be, although Du Bois was able to produce a one-volume beginning, under the aegis of the Phelps-Stokes Fund: The Encyclopedia of the Negro, Preparatory Volume, 1946 [See Rayford Logan: Dictionary of Negro Biography, pp 463-64].
