EDVARD MUNCH (after) Deux Têtes de Femmes

EDVARD MUNCH (after)
Deux Têtes de Femmes.

Color lithograph on cream laid paper, 1913. 480x310 mm; 19x12 1/4 inches, full margins. Printed by Auguste Clot, Paris.

Based on a circa 1899 crayon drawing made by Munch to be reproduced as a lithograph in the art journal Germinal. Munch sent the drawing to Paris in 1899, but it arrived too late to be included in Germinal. Ultimately, the drawing ended up with the Dresden art dealer Ludwig Wilhelm Gutbier, who had Clot print an edition of approximately 50 impressions without Munch's knowledge. Munch later told Julius Meier-Graefe, the publisher of Germinal, that he considered this a derivative lithograph, not by his own hand, and therefore would not hand sign the small edition. Woll Appendix IV 8.
