Edward Coley Burne- Jones Study for Green Summer. Pencil on heavy cream wove paper, circa 1868 257x180 mm:: With a figure study in pencil, verso. The figure sketch on the recto is likely a study for the third figure from the right in Burne Jones's Green Summer, oil on canvas, 1868, private collection. There is also a gouache of this subject in a private collection, New Zealand (see Harrison and Waters Burne- jones, London, 1973, p. 74, illus. 95 The figure sketches on the verso, with a woman playing a keyed instrument, recall the composition for Burne-Jones's King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid, oil on canvas, 1884, Tate Gallery, London, and a gouache of the King's Wedding, 1870, private collection, England, while the figure playing the musical instrument is most closely related to the female organist in Le Chant d'Amour, oil, 1868-77, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
