EDWARD GOREY. Two Russians at Easter Tea.

EDWARD GOREY.
Two Russians at Easter Tea. Unpublished illustration, circa 1949-1951. Ink and watercolor with gold. 89x115 mm; 3 1/2x4 1/2 inches on 4 3/4x6 1/4-inch paper. Signed with Gorey's early monogram, lower right corner. Tipped to matte and archivally framed. Provenance: Gotham Book Mart to present owner.

  • Notes: An early work by Gorey at a time when he was experimenting with more color and the design of what would become his Mr. Earbrass character. In addition to his definitive linework, classic Gorey tropes are evident in the drawing: a samovar, large-headed and bearded men in fur robes, and the examination of curious objects.
