EDWARD PENFIELD ABOUT PARIS. 1895.
14 3/4x9 1/2 inches.
Condition A.
As art director at Harper's, Penfield was also inolved in designing posters for books they published. This book was written by Richard Harding Davis who was one of the most influential war correspondents of the Spanish-American War, and illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson. As the title suggests, it is a socio-travelogue through France's capital city, covering Paris at night and the various cafe-concerts and music halls, Americans living in Paris, how the French mourned for their late president (Carnot), and other tales of life abroad. For the poster, striking a very French chord, Penfield depicts the Moulin Rouge, and two black cats a la Steinlen, with whom he shared a love for all felines. DFP I 364.
