EDWARD PENFIELD THE PEOPLE WE PASS. Circa 1896.
16 3/8x11 1/4 inches.
Condition B+: creases through margins and image.
With this image of "the masses of New York City" (the subtitle of the book), Penfield doffs his artistic cap to Steinlen. Kiehl notes that, "Penfield acknowledged his debt to Steinlen's humorous illustrations of Parisian daily life, which appeared in such magazines as Gil Blas" (Kiehl p. 147), and indeed this image bears many similarities to Steinlen's poster La Rue. The book was published in 1896. Kiehl 173, DFP I 368, Margolin p. 9.
