EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973) Jacob Epstein with his eyes closed.

EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973)
Jacob Epstein with his eyes closed. Silver contact print, the image measuring 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.), the mount 14x11 inches (35.6x27.9 cm.), with the date and numeric notation in the negative, and Steichen's address stamp and the sitter's name in pencil on mount verso. 1927

Provenance: From the Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Steichen's portrait of Epstein is in very good to excellent condition. The print is rich and contrasty, with creamy highlights and beautiful delineations of tone and detail within the figure.

Under close examination, the print evidences a few faint surface impressions, only visible under strong raking light, but is otherwise clean and neat.

The print has thin black margins and their edges evidence some silvering. Its mount recto shows signs of soiling, handling and aging with two corners missing, some glue remnants on the top edge and a piece of archival tape on its verso for repair purposes of the top right corner. The rest of the verso is clean as well as Steichen's stamp.
