EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973) The Flatiron - Evening, from Camera Work XIV. 1904; printed 1906.

EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973)
The Flatiron - Evening, from Camera Work XIV. 1904; printed 1906.
Three-color halftone print, the image measuring 8 3/8x6½ inches (21.3x16.5 cm.), the mount 10 1/8x8 1/8 inches (25.7x20.6 cm.), and a secondary (later) mount 13 7/8x10 7/8 inches (35.2x27.6 cm.).

  • Condition: Steichen's halftone print "The Flatiron - Evening", 1904; printed 1906, is overall in very good condition. The print is bright, clean and neat, with a fine detail-filled tonal range and crisp details.

Under close examination in raking light, we can notice a hairline scratch on the middle right quadrant of the image (in the second branch above the hat of the horse-drawn carriage's driver). While noticeable under close examination, it remains extremely discreet and not immediately apparent. Under scrutiny in strong raking light, it may also be possible to notice a diagonal hairline mark within the branches, possibly graphite. It remains, however, obscured by the graphic qualities of the print and hardly noticeable.

The narrow black margins evidence on their extreme edges some minuscule tiny chips, light rubs on the tip of their corners, but this is also minor and does not detract from the overall presentation. A light sheen variation in the black margins may also be noticeable under strongly-lit viewing condition and possibly related to the mounting.

The primary later mount recto is clean and mounted to a presentation mount (this with a prior hinge at the left edge).

The Flatiron - Evening is not only a strong testimony of modern New York but also a subtle chromatic study of twilight with its undoubtedly Japanese influence. The composition itself integrates natural and modern features that cohabit harmoniously, and the half-tone process allowed Steichen to achieve a painterly quality through subtle tonal variations by manipulating the dot patterns in the printing process. And like Japanese woodblock prints, this colored print was processed with multiple inks in the days before practical color photographic processes became available
