EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973) Vauquois Mine Craters (Argonne Sector) over 2000 ft. in diameter. Circa 1918-19.

EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973)
Vauquois Mine Craters (Argonne Sector) over 2000 ft. in diameter. Circa 1918-19.
Silver print, the image measuring 4½x8 inches (11.4x20.3 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Steichen's title in pencil on verso.

This photograph was taken when Steichen was a member of the Photographic Section, Air Service, of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. The devastated region depicted, which lies to the northwest of Verdun, is now the site of the Memorial of the Defenders of the Argonne, which is engraved with the numbers of 275 French regiments, 18 Italian regiments, and 32 American divisions which saw service in the Argonne sector, and contains the remains of several thousand unknown soldiers.

  • Condition: Edward Steichen's "Vauquois Mine Craters (Argonne Sector) over 2000 ft. in diameter" (circa 1918-19) is in very good to excellent condition. The print has a clean, bright surface and shows both contrast and detail throughout.

In strong raking light it is possible to find some very tiny scattered specs of retouching, all of which is subtle and not immediately apparent. Two of these specs may be associated with shallow pinpoint-sized impressions, but given their small size, this is difficult to discern. The tones are contrasty and rich, and otherwise the surface clean and neat.

The narrow margins are also clean and neat. The print is hinged to the undermat. Print verso is also clean and neat, with just one isolated spot of discoloration, not visible from the front. With Steichen's title in pencil on verso. Overall an exceptional example of Steichen's wartime work.
