At the time this portrait was made, Guadalupe Marín de Rivera was the wife of Weston's friend, the painter Diego Rivera. She was an impressive woman and when Weston first met her, he noted: "Tall, proud of bearing, almost haughty; her walk was like a panther's… Lupe was easily the most striking figure in the crowd, her dark hair like a tousled mane, her strong voice, almost coarse, dominating."

Although 1924 is the date written in the log and on the prints, it is clear that the portraits were taken in the late fall of 1923, although final prints were not made until January 1924. There is no mention of a later sitting. Weston was obviously satisfied with the results he had obtained; six different poses have survived. (Amy Conger)

  • Condition: This powerful portrait of Guadalupe Marín de Rivera, Mexico, from Edward Weston: Fiftieth Anniversary Portfolio, 1902-1952, November 1923; printed 1952 by Brett Weston is in nearly excellent condition. The tones of the print are rich and varied, with strong dark charcoal tones and fine detail.

Under close examination in strong raking light, we can notice a couple exceedingly faint inconsistencies on the surface, including a few scattered specs of - hardly noticeable - period retouching (top of the hair and one in the neck) and a bit of silvering in the top of the hair touching the middle right edge of the print and in the dark area of the lower extreme edge. These slight inconsistencies are not visible at all under typical viewing conditions and remain unobtrusive. Otherwise, the surface is clean and lustrous.

The print has no margins and its edges are clean and neat. The print is dry mounted and the mount - both recto and verso - is clean, with only its extremes far edges age-darkened.

With Weston's initials and negative date "1924" in pencil on mount recto, and the Portfolio Print stamp with the print number "7" in pencil on mount verso.
