EDWARD WESTON (1886-1958) Portrait of Karl Struss.

EDWARD WESTON (1886-1958)
Portrait of Karl Struss. Silver print, the image measuring 7½x9 3/8 inches (19.1x23.8 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Weston's credit and date in pencil in an unknown hand and a Bryan-Brandenburg Co. stamp with a date (1924) on verso. 1923

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: Weston's vintage portrait of Karl Struss is overall in good to very good condition. The print is lustrous and contrasty, with densely packed detail and tonal variety.

The print is ferrotyped and evidences some of the faint surface inconsistencies associated with that process, including soft handling and half-moon creases throughout the surface, and a slight discoloration mark caused by a fingerprint (greyisher) on the extreme left edge. These are primarily visible when viewing the print under careful, strongly-lit viewing conditions, but not under normal viewing conditions.

The thin margin along the left edge evidences scattered tiny linear impressions as well as a tiny spot of emulsion loss, slightly entering the image area, but this is minor and hardly noticeable. The white margins evidence also a few marks in pencil, otherwise they are clean and neat. It verso evidences little sign of handling.
