  • Condition: Edwin Hale Lincoln's lovely and lush set of 24 botanical studies from his series Wildflowers of New England (Part X) is in overall very good to excellent condition. The prints are rich and dimensional, with velvety, clean surfaces. Each exhibits a beautiful tonal range from soft charcoal grays to luminous silvery highlights.

Both Plate 101. Trillium Undulatum and Plate 124. Convolvulus Sepium show an area of scattered foxing spots in the upper right quadrant of the sheet. Three other plates show very faint and tiny foxing marks at the extreme top right and/or top edge of the sheet. This is confined to the extremities of the image areas, and is exceedingly faint, only visible when examining the work closely. These plates are: Plate 112. Hemerocallis Fulva. Plate 113. Smilacina Racemosa. Plate 117. Sisyrinchium Angustifolium.

Any other slight inconsistencies in tone appear to be in the image or retouching, and are not on the surface of the prints.

The mounts are also overall quite clean and neat. Plate 102. Trillium Grandiflorum shows a faint pencil notation in the lower left margin. Several of the mounts also show a narrow band of darkening at one or two of the far edges, but this is not obtrusive.

The preliminary text pages also show slight darkening at some edges. The title page evidences faint soiling from handling, but this is faint and minor.

The case evidences light edgewear and scattered rubbing to the covers. The ties are perished.

Overall a beautiful example of this body of work from Lincoln, with his characteristic blend of elegant detail and exceptional print quality.
