EINSTEIN, ALBERT. Typed Letter Signed, "A. Einstein,"

CONTRASTING HIS VIEW OF REALITY WITH THAT OF QUANTUM MECHANICS EINSTEIN, ALBERT. Typed Letter Signed, "A. Einstein," to Paul Bonofield, responding to questions concerning "the fundamental difficulties we find in our time to explain the phenomena not only of life but also of matter," and expressing his view on whether physics can describe "what is really happening in space and time." 1 page, 4to, "Institute for Advanced Study" stationery; unevenly toned, vertical fold through signature, remnant of prior mounting at top right verso, faint dampstaining at bottom center. With a photocopy of Bonofield's letter to him. Princeton, 18 September 1939

  • Notes: ". . . The physicists of our day believe that there is no possibility to describe what is really happening in space and time. They are convinced that laws are existing only for changing probabilities concerning later experiment. . . .
"My own opinion is, however, that we will return to the task to describe real phänomena [sic] . . . . I do not believe that the light-quanta have reality in the same immediate sense as the corpuscles of electricity. Likewise I do not believe that the particle-waves have reality in the same sense as the particles themselves. The wave-character of particles and particle-character of light will . . . be understood in a more indirect way, not as immediate physical reality. . . ."
