EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. Two Typescripts, unsigned, each with numerous holograph corrections, drafts of the speech he delivered at the Hun

RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN SPEECH GIVEN IN PITTSBURGH EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. Two Typescripts, unsigned, each with numerous holograph corrections, drafts of the speech he delivered at the Hunt Armory in PA on October 9, 1956. The first, the complete second draft. The second, the first 6 pages of the third draft, with 22 holograph lines on verso of page 3. Together over 100 holograph words and other markings, in pencil. Together 21 pages, folio; condition generally good. (TFC) Np, [circa 9 October 1956]

  • Notes: The transcribed text of the Hunt Armory address reflects further development beyond the drafts in the present lot, but the main theme of preserving peace and prospertiy is common to both.
The holograph lines on the verso of page 3 of the third draft: "They have said that your Fed. government have ignored the educational needs of our children!
"The fact is that not once, but twice, in State of the Union messages, I urged speedy action upon the Congress. For the first time in our history the Fed Gov't approved a great convention of educators & laymen from all over our land and the first plan submitted to the Congress for approval represented the concerns of that convention. It was a good plan, but it was rejected. . . . [A] great attempt was made to show that one party is for education, another against. What foolishness!
"But these two simple facts stand out: First, this adm'n urged swift action; the opposition produced nothing. Second, the opposition candidate has endorsed the essential principles of this admin's bill, which his party sent to defeat in the Congress."
