EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. Two Typescripts, unsigned, each with extensive holograph corrections, each a draft of the statement he issued to

"I HAVE BEEN TO KOREA TO LEARN [THE] FACTS OF THE KOREAN WAR" EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. Two Typescripts, unsigned, each with extensive holograph corrections, each a draft of the statement he issued to the press as President-Elect on December 14, 1952. Over 100 words and other markings, most in pencil. Among the lines that were not included in the published statement are some concerning the disposition of the American troops in Korea: "It is not an army whose temper could accurately be called exuberant in any sense. I heard little of the usual jokes and wise cracks one expects among soldiers," to which Ike added in holograph: "Korea does not present laughter-provoking scenes." Together 8 pages, 4to, written on rectos only; later draft evenly toned with minor chipping at edges. (TFC) [Washington, circa 14 December 1952]

  • Notes: The later draft in the present lot includes the following typed and holograph lines that were part of the published statement: "I return with renewed confidence that a satisfactory solution in Korea can be speeded. . . . No more in Korea than anywhere else in the world is honorable peace beyond the power of free men to achieve when they pursue it intelligently and energetically . . . ."
During his 1952 presidential campaign, Eisenhower criticized the Truman administration's failed efforts to settle the conflict on the Korean peninsula, vowing to bring his military experience to bear upon the problem by visiting Korea himself, if he were elected. When he defeated Adlai E. Stevenson and became president, Eisenhower fulfilled his campaign promise.
Provenance: Emmet J. Hughes, by sale to John Fleming, by sale to the Forbes Collection.
