Two Typescripts, unsigned, each with numerous holograph corrections, each a draft of the televised address he delivered on September 19, 1956. Over 100 holograph words and other markings, the later draft in pencil. Earlier draft includes some rudimentary phrases in holograph that were later expanded, including one on "peace": "This one word encompasses our present and our future--all our problems, our struggles, our hopes." Later draft includes a few scattered brief notes and markings by his speechwriter Emmet J. Hughes, in red pencil. Together 27 pages, folio, written on rectos only; later draft on onionskin paper and stapled at upper left. (TFC) [Washington, circa 19 September 1956]

  • Notes: The text of the televised address includes the following lines: "Now upon my inauguration in January, 1953, I made to you this pledge: 'In our quest for an honorable peace, we shall neither compromise, nor tire, nor ever cease.' In the spirit of this pledge, let me indicate a few facts . . . . Korea.--In 1952 the loss of life, for ours and many nations, seemed endless. Today Korea means: peace with honor. . . ."
