Notes: The inscription consists of approximately 25 lines of fragmentary notes written presumably to himself concerning Roman tragedies, comedies, and poetry:
"M. Pacuvius . . . L. Accius . . . Not a true expression of the national mind. First were translations from the Greek. No place for great lyric expression. . . . Plautus. . . . Died out after 100 BC. Did not have to adapt a form but could take one ready made. P. maintained national spirit of comedy. . . ." Examples of Eliot''s early handwriting are uncommon. -
