ELIOT, T.S. Two Typed Letters Signed.

ELIOT, T.S. Two Typed Letters Signed. The first, to Reverend Claude Chavasse, instructing him to wait for Father Herbert to read his manuscript [published by Faber & Faber in 1940 as The Bride of Christ] and sending Herbert's mailing address. The second, to Philip Mairet, thanking for sending his biography of Patrick Geddes [ Pioneer of Sociology (1957)] and anticipating discussing his John Middleton Murry (1958). Each 1 page, 4to or square 8vo, "Faber & Faber" stationery; remnants of hinging at upper edges verso, folds. London, 31 May 1939; 24 October 1957

31 May 1939: ". . . I suggest that you should wait a week or so in order to give Father Herbert time to digest your manuscript, which I have sent him, and then write direct to say that you would welcome his criticism. . . . I shall be most interested in the progress of the book."
24 October 1957: ". . . [T]hank you . . . for sending me your Life and Letters of Patrick Geddes. I have been laid up with Asian 'flu from which I am just recovering . . . . [T]he book . . . seems to me a first-rate piece of work about a man of whom I knew little and with whose work and personality I am very glad to be acquainted.
"As soon as I am feeling fit . . . we can talk about your little book on Middleton Murray [Murry]."
