Bronze with a brass patina on a wooden base, 1980. 635x330×483 mm; 25x13x9 inches. Incised initials on the back side left edge.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, the estate of Edward and Bettiann Gardner, Chicago.

The owners co-founded Soft Sheen Products, Inc. in 1964 which became one of the largest African American owned hair care manufacturing companies in the United States. They were important patrons of the arts in Chicago and part owners of the Chicago Bulls.

Elizabeth Catlett made several versions of this distinctive figure sculpture between 1979 and 1997, including in bronze, polychromed mahogany and amber onyx.
