Collection of approximately 170 charcoal and pencil drawings in a twine-bound sketchbook, circa 1881. 216x146 mm; 8 1/2x5 3/4 inches (sheets). Signed and with the artist''s Boston addess in pencil on the front pastedown; many sheets annotated. Includes portrait and figure studies and landscape and city studies from various European locations (including Holland, Rouen, Antwerp, Oxford and others).

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1855, Hale (1855-1940) was a noted Impressionist painter and etcher. She belonged to the prominent Beecher-Hale family in Boston, and her relatives include Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom''s Cabin, and Revolutionary War hero Nathan Hale. She began her formal art education in Boston with painter William Rimmer, and later traveled to Philadelphia to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. As one of the few professional women artists of her era, Hale garnered international acclaim for her work, exhibiting widely across the United States and Europe, and helped pave the way for the next generation of New England female artists.

Upon request, Swann will facilitate the shipping of purchases to out-of-town buyers at an additional charge for packing, shipping and insurance, but will not be responsible for any loss, damage or delay resulting from the packing, handling and shipping thereof.
