Ellington, Edward "Duke." "Jump for Joy."

Holograph arrangement for brass and horns in three staves, written on two pages of standard 12 stave music paper; with an alternate ending on a third page; title in pencil on a fourth page, with sketch for "Linger in My Memory" on a fifth; some creasing to the upper corner of the alternate end, small closed tear archivally repaired, darker streak down the margin of first two leaves, light general wear. NP, circa 1941

  • Notes: Unsigned but in Ellington's hand. With his indications at the opening for Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown, and Ray Nance. At the end, Ellington has written "Ending on Jump for Joy for parts at the Club" (Cotton Club?). Jump for Joy was a musical revue, subtitled A Sun-Tanned Revu-sical, that opened at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles in July 1941. Duke Ellington and Hal Borne wrote the music with Paul Webster and Sid Kuller providing the lyrics.
