  • Notes: scarce first edition in english of the first objective book-length study of homosexuality in English and the first volume of Ellis's Studies in the Psychology of Sex, withdrawn before publication at the behest of Symonds's literary executor. Owing to Ellis's concerns in the wake of the Oscar Wilde trial and difficulties in finding a publisher, the book appeared first in a German version in 1896. A slightly revised second edition in English omitting Symonds's name was published later in 1897 and banned for obscenity.
