ELLSWORTH KELLY
Portrait of Henry Geldzahler.

Relief print on white wove paper mounted on heavy wove paper, 1994. 275x210 mm; 11x8 1/4 inches. Signed, titled, dedicated, dated and numbered 14/20 in ink, verso. A very good impression of this unrecorded print.

Geldzahler (1935-1994), a New York art historian and art critic, was the first curator for 20th Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. From 1977 to 1982, he was the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for New York City under Mayor Edward I. Koch.

Geldzahler was friends with established artists like Willem de Kooning and Andy Warhol and helped bring numerous younger artists, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat (see lot 215) and Dale Chihuly, to greater prominence.
