EMMA AMOS (1938 - )
Sand Tan.
Color etching and aquatint on buff wove paper, 1980. 670x570 mm; 26 3/4x22 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 13/25 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Carracio Printing Studio, New York, with the blind stamp lower left. A very good impression of this scarce print.
Illustrated: the Library Congress exhibition Creative Space: Fifty Years of Robert Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop; and in The Other Side of Color: African-American Art in the Collection of Camille O. and William H. Cosby, Jr.
According to the Library of Congress: "In her work, Emma Amos often addresses issues of feminism, politics, culture, and her own personal history. Born in Georgia, she studied in Ohio, London, and New York. She was the only woman in the Spiral artists' group (1963-1966) that included Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, Ernest Crichlow, Norman Lewis, and Hale Woodruff. Sand Tan, printed at the studio of Kathy Caraccio, is from a series of prints created by the artist to represent strong-looking, beautiful black women. Amos first came to Bob Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop in the late 1960s."
