  • Notes: excessively rare first edition engraved by paul revere. An early tune book, it was the first to introduce the anthem (a hymn sung responsively) to America. According to Brigham, the design of the ornamental title-page is derivative of the one in James Lyon's Urania with minor changes by Revere, who engraved the entire book except the Preface (which was typeset). Interestingly, the Preface indicates that the work was done entirely on American-made paper. Brigham locates just 6 known copies, each defective and lacking leaves (American Antiquarian Society, Newberry Library, Library of Congress, Boston Public Library, Massachusetts Historical Society and the New York Public Library). The Boston Public Library's copy was the last to come to auction, and was purchased by the library in 1903 for $52.50. Brigham, Paul Revere's Engravings, pages 16-17; Evans 9659; Sabin 24654.
