New York, 12 February 1906; [London, 28 May 1913: from postmark].

  • Notes: 12 February 1906: ". . . I'm at the 34th Rep. [Manhattan Opera Company on 34th Street?] and I've performed in ten operas. I also performed Faust in French . . . , which was a great success, but the press wasn't happy because I'm Italian. . . ."

On January 29, 1906, at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, Caruso performed the lead role in Charles Gounod's Faust. The performance was given in French, and while the Met often produced operas by French composers, they were sometimes performed in Italian, depending upon casting requirements.
