(ENTERTAINERS.) HEPBURN, KATHARINE. Autograph Letter Signed, to "My dear Mr. [Ellis Adam] Gimbel," thanking for sending a replica of the medal he awarded to Amelia Earhart in 1932. 1 page, oblong 12mo, written on recto and verso of single sheet, embossed with initials "KHH"; minor crease at upper right corner. (SFC) Np, circa 1937

"I can't tell you how much I appreciate your sending me the Amelia Earhart medal--I was deeply touched, and I shall enjoy having it. It was tremendously nice of you to think of sending that particular thing to me."
In 1932, soon after Amelia Earhart completed her solo flight across the Atlantic, Gimbel Brothers honored Earhart by giving her a Gimbel National Award Medal recognizing her as "The Most Outstanding Woman in America in 1932" at a banquet held in her honor. Gimbel Brothers had replicas of the medal made and, between 1937 and 1941, sent them as gifts to over 50 leaders in business, politics, sports, and entertainment, including golfer Jean Bauer and actress Katharine Hepburn.
In 1933, Hepburn performed as daring pilot Lady Cynthia Darrington in Christopher Strong , a role inspired by Amelia Earhart.
