ERIC ROHMAN (1891-1949) CHARLESTON BOY. Gouache maquette. Circa 1926.
38 1/2x27 1/4 inches, 98x69 cm.
Condition B+: tears, pin holes and staining in margins and image; notes and inscriptions in pencil. Paper.
The first two decades of the 20th century were golden years for Swedish poster design. Eric Rohman was one of the country's leading poster artists, designing a remarkable number of posters promoting American movies. His international renown was enough to warrant an article in the German poster magazine Das Plakat in 1921. Rohman's individual design style was less heavily influenced by German designers than many of his peers. This is the original art for a popular "Roaring Twenties" silent comedy that was released in America under the title "Skinner's Dress Suit." Rohman captures the excitement of the dance (the Charleston features rather prominently in the film) from a creative, dramatic angle. Rohman's pencil instructions to the printer are still visible. It is uncertain whether this design was actually issued as a poster.
