Eric Sloane, born Everard Jean Hinrichs in Forest Hills, New York, was a successful painter, illustrator, and author. His first artistic training was under Frederick William Goudy, a typeface designer and one of Sloane's neighbors. In 1925, Sloane worked as a travelling sign painter until he enrolled at the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1929. He eventually moved to New York to attend the Art Students League under John Sloan, whose surname he chose as his assumed name ("Eric" was a shortening of "America"). Sloane settled in New England in 1940, drawn to its early architecture and farmscapes. By the 1950s, Sloane purchased an old farmhouse near Candlewood Lake, Connecticut, and began to focus on landscapes, his fascination with antique tools, and early American culture.
