Erich Erler

1870-1946

Winter in Bayern. 1905.

Condition A-: minor repaired tear at right edge; minor creases in lower right corner.

Erich Erler, sometimes known as Samedan, was primarily a lithographer, book-maker and painter, but completed this poster, as well as another of a man skiing. He contracted tuberculosis in the late 1890s, forcing him to relocate to the Swiss village of Samedan to convalesce. Erich regularly exhibited with the Die Scholle group in Munich, and shared a studio with his brother Fritz, who was an accomplished artist as well. Despite owing their artistic development to the patronage of Jewish collectors Antonia and Albert Neisser, Erich's brother Fritz would go on to become one of Hitler's five major "court artists," creating propaganda posters for the Nazi regime. Erich's own work was included in nationalistic German art exhibits of the 1930s, but he seems to have withdrawn from the public art world during that time. (Annex Galleries).

This image was also printed in a window card format. Alpi / Manifesti 105.
28½x37½ inches, 72½x95¼ cm. Klein & Volbert, Munich.
