Watercolor on very thin wove paper, laid down to archival cardstock, 1942. Approximately 230x176 mm; 9x7 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, lower right. Repaired 6 1/2 inch horizontal tear.

Provenance: the artist; private Detroit collection; Jane Harrison, New York, NY.

This small watercolor portrait is the earliest known painting of the artist to come to auction. In 1942, Crichlow exhibited at the Downtown Gallery in New York in what appears to have been the earliest gallery exhibition of African-American artists, with Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Norman Lewis.
