  • Provenance:
    David J. Holmes Collection

    Other notes:
David J. Holmes was a highly regarded figure in the rare book world, known particularly for his expertise in the lesser-known literary figures of the nineteenth century. Beyond his professional work, he assembled what has been described as the finest private collection devoted to Kenneth Grahame. Holmes felt a deep personal affinity with Grahame, whose writings reflected values he greatly admired: simplicity, sincerity, and reverence for the natural world. Over the course of twenty-five years, he carefully refined and expanded the collection, with special attention to Grahame's relationship with America.

This lifelong pursuit culminated in an exhibition at the Grolier Club, which Holmes considered the crowning achievement of his collecting career. His knowledge of Grahame's life and works was widely respected, and scholars, researchers, and biographers frequently sought his expertise and guidance.
