EUGÈNE ATGET (1857-1927)

Silver print, the image measuring 6½x9 1/8 inches (16.5x23.2 cm.), the mount 13x10 inches (33x25.4 cm.), with the "Photograph by Eugene Atget/Printed by Berenice Abbott" stamp, and Abbott's signature in ink on verso.

  • Condition: Eugène Atget's "Carousel" (1923; printed circa 1960 by Berenice Abbott) is in excellent condition. The print is lush and beautifully rendered with contrasty, fine detail throughout. The surface is without apparent flaw.

The mount is also overall bright, clean, and neat. There is a very faint fine line of pencil transfer visible, primarily at the left and lower left, likely corresponding to a prior overmat window. This is unobtrusive and does not impact the print at all. There are also some tiny scattered specs of soiling at the top corner of recto and just faintly scattered on verso again, not impacting the print. With the "Photograph by Eugene Atget/Printed by Berenice Abbott" stamp, and Abbott's signature in ink on mount verso.

Overall a stunning example of this important image by Atget, printed by Berenice Abbott.

Provenance: Cronin Gallery, Houston; to the Present Owner
