The French pioneer of documentary photography Eugène Atget is best known for documenting the architecture and street scenes of Paris before their disappearance to modernization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work was rediscovered by American photographer Berenice Abbott and has since been celebrated for its historical importance.

  • Condition: Atget's pair of photographs depicting Rue des Canettes, Maison #18 and À la Treille d'Or. 6 Rue de Condé, 1899-1900 is overall in very good condition. Though the outer edges show some fading and discoloration, the images remain rich and contrasty, with plenty of detail.

Print 1: The surface of the print shows faint scattered imperfections associated with the thin albumen paper, including very slight and unobtrusive linear marks and soft handling creases. There is also a small discoloration circular mark in the vitrine in the middle-left quadrant and a pinpoint-sized tear in the lower left edge. While apparent, especially in raking light, these are not distracting, and do not detract from the overall presentation.

The verso is mostly clean, with Atget's title and inventory number in pencil on verso, but with a few apparent foxing specs which may have impacted the image area. This is visible on the extreme lower edge of the image area where we can notice a slight shift in tone. Here as well, these slight surface imperfections are not disruptive to the composition.

Print 2: The surface of the print is clean and bright, but shows faint scattered imperfections associated with the thin albumen paper, including very slight and unobtrusive linear and small half-moon creases, as well as some fading in the brighter area of the right quadrant. The verso evidences a bit of soil on the upper right corner, but is otherwise clean, with Atget's title and inventory number in pencil on verso.
