This carefully balanced and colorful composition is a strong example of this artist's distinctive approach to abstract painting. Eugene J. Martin was born in Washington, DC, and after the age of five grew up in foster care both in DC and on a farm in Clarksburg, MD. After being honorably dismissed from the Navy, he enrolled in the Corcoran School of Art from 1960-63, and became a full-time visual artist. He did not belong to any school or art movement, remaining an individualist throughout most of his adult life in Washington, DC. In 1996, he moved to Lafayette, LA with his wife, a biologist, whom he married in 1988. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and stroke in 2001, but continued to paint.

Martin's paintings and collages are included in such permanent collections as the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Paul R. Jones Collection, University of Delaware, the Walter O. Evans Collection of African American Art, Savannah, GA, the Munich Museum of Modern Art, the Louisiana State University Museum, Baton Rouge, LA, and the Sheldon Museum of Art, Lincoln, NE. Biography courtesy of Suzanne Fredericq, the artist's widow.
