Eugène Ogé

1861-1936

La Menthe - Pastille. Circa 1904.

Condition B+: replaced losses and repaired tears in margins and along horizontal and vertical folds; creases and abrasions in text, image, and along horizontal and vertical folds. Framed.

"International tensions and the fears of war they arouse are addressed with humor in several posters by artists such as Ogé, Barrère, Edouard Bernard, and Auzolle. With "Menthe Pastille," the various sovereigns will more easily resolve their problems. In a first poster dating from 1903, Loubet and Nicholas II discuss "the sure way to have a boy" while Wilhelm II pours a drink for the Emperor of Japan, Mutsuhito. Pope Pius X and Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy, sign their reconciliation. Edward VII and Jacques Lebaudy, an eccentric who crowned himself "Jacques I, Emperor of the Sahara," discuss the African colonies. Behind them, Leopold lovingly contemplates the portrait of his muse, Cléo de Mérode, in front of the young Alfonso XIII seated in a child's chair. As for Uncle Sam, he gives a drink to a young Black boy wisely sitting on his lap" (Celebrities p. 80).

Ogé 240, Celebrities 121, Boissons 380.
49x77½ inches, 124½x196¾ cm. P. Vercasson & Cie, [Paris].
