Select group of 4 images from the series "Faulkner's Mississippi." Silver prints, 5 1/4x7 1/4 to 10x13 inches (13.3x18.4 to 25.4x33 cm.), and the reverse, each with a hand stamp and Evans's name and various notations, in an unknown hand, on verso. 1948

  • Notes: These images are from a series of 14 photographs produced for, and illustrated in, Vogue magazine entitled "Faulkner''s Mississippi," published October 1, 1948, pp. 144-149.

    In 1948, William Faulkner published his first novel in six years, entitled "Intruder in the Dust," which drove Evans back to the South, where he produced photographs for his only commission from Vogue Magazine. The words of the great writer and images of the great photographer were tightly linked in their sympathetic documentation of the southern landscape.
