EXCEPTIONAL CONTENT PURVIS, ROBERT; Sr. Autograph Letter Signed, to Wendell Garrison. 6 pages, 8vo. Washington, 17 February 1881
- Notes: At the time this letter was written, Wendell Garrison was editing the multi-volume collected papers of his father, William Lloyd Garrison. Purvis answers a number of questions and discusses Garrison's having been under indictment for libel by a Georgia court order at the time of attending the Anti-Slavery Convention in Philadelphia [1833]. Purvis goes on to describe having to smuggle Garrison out of Philadelphia via New Jersey to New York and onto a packet ship bound for England.
