EXCEPTIONAL COPY

BROWN, WILLIAM WELLS. The Narrative of William Wells Brown, a Fugitive Slave. Written by Himself. Portrait frontispiece. 12mo, original lettered wrappers, one very small abrasion to the head of the backstrip, otherwise a very lovely copy. Boston: Anti-Slavery Office, 1857

  • Notes: first edition of the author's first book. Brown (1814-1884) was born into slavery on the plantation of John Young. He passed from Young through three owners and in 1834 escaped from his last owner in Cincinnati. Brown has the distinction of being the author of the first novel written by an African-Aemerican, "Clotelle, or the President's Daughter" (1853), and the first play written by an African-American, "The Escape" (1856). Sabin 8594; Work, page 311; Blockson Collection, 9748.
