(EXPLORERS.) STANLEY, HENRY MORTON. Autograph Letter Signed, "Henry MStanley," to Stanley M. Burroughs ("My Dear young namesake"),

(EXPLORERS.) STANLEY, HENRY MORTON. Autograph Letter Signed, "Henry MStanley," to Stanley M. Burroughs ("My Dear young namesake"), thanking for a New Year gift, advising him to become wise, noble, and good, and, in a postscript: "Will you be good enough to tell your little sister from me that I also thank her & hope that she will see many Happy New Years." 2 pages, 12mo, personal stationery, written on the first and terminal pages of a folded sheet; horizontal fold. With the original envelope. [London], 2 January 1894

  • Notes: ". . . I . . . shall hope to see a proof of your happy progress in life--in height, in strength, and above all in the best manly virtues. Good little children are loved by all but good men are even better than good children, because the budding graces of the good children have ripened at last into fair fruit. Therefore I hope my little namesake as he grows tall & strong will try and remember that he is to strive to become as wise as he is tall, as noble as he is strong, and as greatly good as the best man living."
Stanley M. Burroughs was the son of American British pharmaceutical businessman Silas M. Burroughs (1846-1895) who, with Henry Wellcome, formed Burroughs Wellcome & Company in 1880. The marketing for the Burroughs-Wellcome medicine chest claimed that nine such chests were taken by Henry M. Stanley on his expedition to rescue Emin Pasha in 1886.
