Carl Peters (1856-1918) was a German explorer who founded the German colony of East Africa. Between 1888 and 1890, Peters directed an expedition to rescue Mehmed Emin Pasha [born a German, baptized Eduard Schnitzer] from the rebellion led by Muhammad Ahmad in Equatoria, South Sudan. The earlier expedition of Henry M. Stanley is better known because of the success of Stanley''s book, In Darkest Africa. In 1892, during an expedition for the German East Africa Company, Emin Pasha was killed by slave traders.
