FADEN, WILLIAM. The Attack and Defeat of the American Fleet Under Benedict Arnold, by the King's Fleet

FADEN, WILLIAM. The Attack and Defeat of the American Fleet Under Benedict Arnold, by the King's Fleet Commanded by Captn Thos Pringle, Upon Lake Champlain, the 11th of October, 1776. Engraved Revolutionary War battle plan and letterpress on watermarked laid paper. 19 1/4x18 1/2 inches sheet size, ample margins; folded in quadrants, flattened and stabilized on verso with silk lining, paper thinned at edges and along fold lines but with no noticeable printed loss save for a minute area of shoreline hachuring reinstated at center fold intersection. London: Wm. Faden, 1776

  • Notes: Scarce chart presenting the positions and movement of the British and American fleets off Valcour Island in Lake Champlain during one of the earliest naval battles of the Revolution. The plan and descriptive text below it detail the British victory over the Benedict Arnold-led Rebels. An earlier state of the map was published, naming not Thomas Pringle as commander of the British fleet, rather Guy Carleton. Though Carleton''s engagement was a victory on that day, the British came to view the skirmish as a failure as it stalled and prevented their movement toward Albany that winter, an outcome many predict would have given the British potential to end the war. Pringle''s name appeared in a second issue, as present, as a way to ease any tarnishing of Carleton''s reputation. Nebenzahl 47; Stevens & Tree 24(b).
