FADEN, WILLIAM. The Province of New Jersey, Divided Into East and West, Commonly Called The Jerseys.

FADEN, WILLIAM. The Province of New Jersey, Divided Into East and West, Commonly Called The Jerseys. Large engraved map of New Jersey, Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, and New York City with a bucolic engraved title cartouche. 30 3/4x22 1/2 inches overall, dissected into 16 segments and mounted to original linen; original hand-color in outline; partial linen separations but no printed loss, old tack holes at each corner, some mount residue on verso but otherwise an attractive, unsophisticated example; contemporary ink stamp of "F.W von Wurmb" on verso. London, 1777

  • Notes: First state of one of the most important mappings of New Jersey from the Revolutionary War period; no previous map portrayed knowledge of the region on as large of a scale or in such a definitive manner.

The interesting provenance stamp conveys a sense of immediate contemporary local relevance: Friedrich Wilhelm von Wurmb was a Hessian Leib Infantry Colonel in the 2nd Division under General von Knyphausen during the Revolution. In mid-June 1778 this division was responsible for transporting the British army''s massive baggage train in an overland march across central New Jersey from Philadelphia to New York. F.W. was brother to the more celebrated Hessian serviceman, Jäger Colonel Ludwig von Wurmb. Stevens & Tree 37(a); Snyder, Mapping of NJ, pages 57-61.
