- Notes: first edition. Fairbank was one of the conductors of the Underground Railroad. He spent nearly seventeen years in jail for having aided fugitive slaves. His account is rich in anecdotes of Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth and other notables, but is also valuable for its account of fugitive slaves. Work, page 306.
