FEDERICO CASTELLON
Of Land and Sea.

Lithograph, circa 1939. 265x250 mm; 10 3/8x9 3/4 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower right. A very good impression of this scarce, early lithograph.

Castellon (1914-1971) was born in Madrid, Spain, and became a Spanish-American artist known for his surrealist paintings and prints. Castellon's artwork was heavily influenced by his Spanish heritage, as well as his admiration for the works of Giorgio de Chirico and Salvador Dalí. Castellon studied at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he was mentored by the Spanish realist painter (and Franco sympathizer) Ignacio Zuloaga. After completion of his art studies, he moved to Paris in 1933, where he became a part of the vibrant avant-garde art scene. He participated in the surrealist movement, joining the Surrealist Group of Paris, and exhibiting his works in their group exhibitions.

In 1937, with the growing threat of war on the horizon, Castellon moved to New York, where he further developed his own unique style. His later work featured surrealist elements, combined with a bold use of color and texture. He also became proficient with lithography, creating prints of figures in landscapes with dreamlike qualities, like the current work. Freundlich 7.
