FELRATH HINES (1913 - 1993) Sea Maidens.

FELRATH HINES (1913 - 1993)
Sea Maidens.

Color etching, 1948. 127x175 mm; 5x6 7/8 inches, full margins. Artist's proof. Signed, dated and inscribed "Artist Proof" in pencil, lower margin. A very good, bright impression of this scarce print.

This is the first art work by Hines to come to auction.

In the mid-1940s, Felrath Hines studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago before learning art conservation. From this period through the 1950s, Hines worked in an Abstract Expressionist style, while working full time as a conservator. He was the chief conservator at both the National Portrait Gallery and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, and worked as a conservator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Yet he continued his art, and from the 1960s on, his works took on a flat, geometric composition, which characterized his work until his death.
