FERDINAND LUNEL (1857-1933)

ETRETAT / TENNIS CLUB. 1896.

46¾x31½ inches, 118¾x80 cm. Nouvelles Affiches Artistiques, [Paris].
Condition B: extensive replaced losses and overpainting in upper margins, text and right image; repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges and in image and along vertical and horizontal folds; darkening at edges.

Etretat, with beautiful natural attractions like the sea and impressive cliffs, was a popular tourist destination. Only four hours from Paris, the resort boasted a Casino, golf courses and tennis courts. It is the natural, rugged beauty of the surroundings and the tennis that Lunel focuses on. Lunel, like so many of his contemporaries, did illustration work for Parisian magazines, and also designed a few posters. This image stands out from most travel posters of the time, in that it is not just a static landscape. Lunel imbues the image with style and personality, making the fashionable young woman's white shirt pop out of the dark, dramatic background.
